This week I traveled to Lenzerheide/Switzerland . This is where the season’s last Men’s and Women’s Ski World Cup takes place. It is also one of the most difficult downhill races in the World Cup. It is very steep and very fast. Julia Mancuso has won last years downhill race here in Lenzerheide.
Some weeks ago Julia and I decided to create some new imagery together during these intense days. So we met Sunday evening to make a plan for the next days. Of course when you work with Julia , you have to be flexible and quick and we arranged to meet 8 am Monday morning [no time for jet lag] for the first official inspection of the downhill course. The athletes inspect the course with their coaches and go through every curve and detail. And yes, I was on her side all the way. To be honest I had two goals: 1. Come back down in ONE piece and do not hurt anybody else if crashing. 2. Make rare seen images with her on the course. I was very happy to survive that first hour with her. I learned the next day that on a second inspection a medical doctor crashed into an Norwegian athlete and his coach. The coach was injured.
After this we went on and looked for good spots to do action shots. That was tough because the weather changed rapidly and it was all grey. Turns out that my favorite action shot so far was from that day. You see this image down here: Classy, clean, reduced to the max. For me it has a feel like a VOGUE fashion image. The grey sky makes the difference. I love it.
All in all I spend 5 hours with Julia on the mountain ( up and down and up and down ). While she was still her happy self, laughing and making jokes, I could barely walk. The second picture below shows us in the USA team trailer after that day. While I am writing this, I just finished day two with more action and portraits to edit. Tomorrow the races begin. Very excited about what to come !
