welcome to my world

Living in New York makes you realize that life is not about one thing only. For me it's about the broad experience that allows me to explore my passions. Besides my love for photography and film, I paint and draw or play piano. Every now and then I am on a road trip across the USA with a 60's camera and a 65' Plymouth Barracuda. But there is so much more to explore: art of any kind, the way other artists see the world, or simply the question : Where does art begin and where does it end ?

    JULIA MANCUSO

This week I traveled to Lenzerheide/Switzerland . This is where the season’s last Men’s and Women’s Ski World Cup takes place. It is also one of the most difficult downhill races in the World Cup. It is very steep and very fast. Julia Mancuso has won last years downhill race here in Lenzerheide. Some weeks [...]

Last week I went back to beautiful Lake Tahoe.  Met my friends and worked with some outstanding athletes to create some new imagery for my portfolio.

Some weeks ago Julia and I decided to create some new imagery together during these intense days. So we met Sunday evening to make a plan for the next days. Of course when you work with Julia , you have to be flexible and quick and we arranged to meet 8 am Monday morning [no time for jet lag] for the first official inspection of the downhill course. The athletes inspect the course with their coaches and go through every curve and detail. And yes, I was on her side all the way. To be honest I had two goals: 1. Come back down in ONE piece and do not hurt anybody else if crashing. 2. Make rare seen images with her on the course. I was very happy to survive that first hour with her. I learned the next day that on a second inspection a medical doctor crashed into an Norwegian athlete and his coach. The coach was injured.

After this we went on and looked for good spots to do action shots. That was tough because the weather changed rapidly and it was all grey. Turns out that my favorite action shot so far was from that day. You see this image down here: Classy, clean, reduced to the max. For me it has a feel like a VOGUE fashion image. The grey sky makes the difference. I love it.

All in all I spend 5 hours with Julia on the mountain ( up and down and up and down ). While she was still her happy self, laughing and making jokes, I could barely walk. The second picture below shows us in the USA team trailer after that day.  While I am writing this,  I just finished day two with more action and portraits to edit. Tomorrow the races begin. Very excited about what to come !

Although the snow conditions weren’t really what we needed for extreme Ski/Snowboard action photography, these athletes nailed it and made it look very easy. Needless to mention, it was the driest Jan/Feb since ages.. The mountains sure have their own pace.

    CINEGIF MAILING

We just finished a mayor email blast using CINEGIF  to showcase my work in a different way. Check out their website to see what you can do with it ! I wanted to combine a cinegif with some still images in my mailout. This is very tricky because you can’t just import a cinegif into your design when you create with, let’s say Adobe Indesign or Photoshop. It would not show any movement at all. Just a single image. So, I contacted the people at CINEGIF and they helped me out with a custom made cool template. So far it is not possible to create this template with out them. BUT, here is the good news : CINEGIF is working on a software that allows you to design your own templates !!! AND it is coming out very soon. I will sure keep you posted on this one !

Here is one of the designs we made for different mailings . I just love it !

Thanks so much Jennifer and Graham @ cinegif for making this happen !

PS:  did you know that the new Poster for  Disney’s movie OZ is created with a CINEGIF ?

    KORG 3.0 meets POBY

After two days of creating outdoor images with my friend Galen Gifford on Lake Tahoe, I met a man who I can truly say is not only very special, but also has one of the best energy I ever felt. Grant Korgan aka KORG.  A great athlete who injured his spinal cord in a 162 feet jump with a snow mobile in 2010. That glorious, familiar, and polarizing flight, was two feet further than he’d planned…For Korg, the flat landing that resulted from those two extra feet spelled the difference between an often-everyday experience of pura vida with friends, and gazing into a monotone pain gripped sky, with no sensations from his bellybutton south. His first Lumbar vertebrae had disintegrated completely and in that moment, he was a only a few hours away from hearing he’d never walk again… Grant Korgan’s childhood dream, the same dream he held on to as he lay in an open expanse of snow on a cold March morning in 2010 is to be a helicopter pilot. On this day, however, as a chopper pounded drumbeats into the steely grey sky above him, he’d find himself not at the controls, but on a backboard, being strapped to the floor.

In that space of change, and the reality of what could have been darkness for anyone else, Grant Korgan stayed true to himself, he chose light… he chose FIRE!

And let me tell you, meeting this guy is pure energy,  beautiful, positive and makes you rethinking your own life and your view of it. So in these view hours of shredding the beautiful Lake Tahoe with a SkySki Hydrofoil, I had the chance to photograph KORG in full action. Although he told me so many times how happy he is that I photograph him and how beautiful it is for him to meet me, he had no idea how happy he made me to give me the honor spending some time with him. Madluv, my friend ! Madluv.

Here are a view of the  images I have taken.

And here photos of Grant and I in the water after our adventure. Pure happiness !

    WELL DONE LONDON !!

For over 25 years I photographed large global sports events like the Olympics, World Cups, etc. This time I was in Germany spending quality time with my family. Of course we were watching the Olympics too, following all these great athletes and their performance. So cool. And London did a wonderful job presenting us these games. I loved it. It is always special for me to see all the athletes I photographed perform at the Olympics. I mean, shit, one day you hang out with them and next thing you know you see them performing in front of up to 80.000 people live , not to mention the billions of eyes watching on TV ! While on my way back to NYC  we stopped to stay overnight at a hotel in Frankfurt before flying out early in the morning. While my wife and the kids were asleep I had to watch the gold medal game in Beach Volleyball. I photographed the brazilian team Emanuel / Allison for VISA last year. They were playing against the German team Brink / Reckermann which I photographed a little while ago too. So despite my love for brazil and their famous drinks called caipirinha, the music, the people, the beaches, despite a really cool time in London with Allison / Emanuel  I just was sweating for the germans to win this one and be the first european team ever to win gold in beach volleyball. And than late at night they did it !!! Congrats guys, that was fantastic ! My favorite image from Ellison / Emanuel is this one below. It shows their character and their happiness so well. It is always a pleasure to be around them !  The other one is a the campaign I photographed the german team for.

Ah yes, of course, Michael Phelps! He is now the most decorated Olympic athlete ever ! Did anyone not believe in it ?  Congrats Michael, enjoy your life after swimming to the fullest  !

    VISA OLYMPICS PRINTS OUT

I just got the first tear sheets from the VISA olympic campaign with MICHAEL PHELPS. Sweet. Love them !

OLYMPIC ATHLETES for VISA and the story behind

When do you have a photo job that gives you goose bumps and chills ? Even after all these years in this business, photographing olympic athletes is very very special for me. Athletes who dedicate their whole life just for these weeks to compete on the highest level possible against the very best athletes around the world. Only a few can imagine what that means. Physically and mentally. After the Winter Olympics TBWA/CHIAT/DAY and the creative team around  CD Gage Clegg gave me the opportunity to photograph the VISA campaign for the upcoming Summer Olympics in London. Every athlete has her/his own story of success and failure during their career, this is what forms you. Including me when I used to play water polo as a pro back in the days. And then you stand in front of this guy who won 8 gold medals in just one olympic event. Are you kidding me ? It was really special to meet MICHAEL PHELPS and see how dedicated and focused he is to his sports. We shot in, under and outside the water. What more can I ask for as to spend a day with this guy in the pool ? It was a true highlight of my long career.

Here are some outputs of Michael Phelps that are not shown on my website :

But there were other very cool athletes too ! I met  the russian pole vault gold medal winner YELENA ISINBAYEVA . In Monaco. What a wonderful lady and how easy to work with! And yes my russian background made this one very special too ( my parents are both russian and I was born in Germany ). Than we went to Paris met  VALERIE ADAMS the shot put olympic gold medalist from New Zealand who truly has a very unique and inspiring story of her own. We had a blast in Paris and were laughing a lot.  NASTIA LIUKIN the gymnast and gold medal winner,  who is trained by her father who was a gold medal gymnast himself. Wonderful, right ? LI NA the only chinese top ten  tennis player ! We met her in Munich / Germany where she lives during the winter period. And  last but not least the two guys from Brazil, who might just win the gold medal in beach volley ball in London. EMANUEL REGO and ALISON CERUTTI . The new dream team in beach volleyball. We met in London and shot on the iconic location : the horse guards parade in central London. Be prepared for a very special event this year ! As everyone can imagine, this has been a dream job for me !

And here some images of Yelena Isinbayeva that are not shown on my website : On a wooden speedboat offshore Monaco

Kisses for all her fans out there

    LINCOLN MKZ VIDEO INSTALLATION “UP”

Please install the free Adobe Flash Player to view this content.

The last two weeks we were working on this cool Video installation called “UP” for the new LINCOLN MKZ. A car with a whole new feeling to drive. It has this awesome glass roof that opens up a whole new world while driving. So Billie from Brand Connections called me up and we decided to create a completly new video for this presentation. We drove around in a convertible car for two days and shot “UP”. A very dreamy interpretation of the city when you look up. Needless to mention that I had a stiff neck for two days and oh yeah, we almost got arrested because we were filming while driving through the Battery Park tunnel. Once we came out of the tunnel the road was blocked and they where questioning us. The cops were very friendly and did let us go after we deleted the footage. Kevin, my editor, did night shifts to make sure we could deliver right in time. All this was produced in less than a week by our new company FRUITS INVOLVED LLC. Here are some little video clips from last nights show. Go and enjoy it yourself from Wednesday until Saturday from 6pm-12pm. Right at the Gansevoort hotel.

The video was created in Venice Beach, CA with the ARRI Alexia and the stills with the Nikon D3x

    VENICE BEACH

West Coast . Ahhhhh. Just so wonderful. The food, the weather, walking around in old worn out Converse and jeans, not a hint of hectic as in New York. We went with the kids to have some days off, see friends and family, go to the beach and relax. At the same time I prepared a video/still shoot for my reel which will come out very soon. We had a fantastic crew, with the best camera out there right now – ARRI Alexia – and a cool location and a very gorgeous model. Perfect ingredients for a cool piece. And after all this was done, I could finally spend some quality time with my son and my little baby girl here in cool Venice Beach. Can’t ask for more. Here are some making of images of the upcoming video piece.

JULIA MANCUSO WRITES HER PRINCESS-DIARIES IN SNOW MAGAZINE !

While working on the design of my new Portfolios for 2012 today, I got an email with the PDF of the story about JULIA MANCUSO in SNOW MAGAZINE. It’s really cool when Julia writes about what goes on in her mind during and in between races. Well done Julia ! Of course it was real fun shooting Julia in a total different, fashion way ! She feels comfortable in any outfit. I am also really happy about the print layout of the whole story. Beautifully done by the art director of SNOW magazine. See the print story below and click HERE to read the full article online.

    A SHORT PERSONAL NOTE

It is not really my thing to talk about my private life. But I would like to make a little exception.
This year 2011 has been an incredible year of complete transformation. Not only did I marry my wonderful lady Amber, we also got our little baby girl Mila Vivienne. Our son Connor was the one who didn’t stop believing in completing our family with a sibling he so much wanted. What a happy man I am to have them all.

Thank you Mila for being in our life and thank you Connor for your beautiful vision.

    Love P.

IT’S ABOUT TIME ! VISA THE CAMPAIGN.

For over five months I haven’t  blogged at all. That is not only because my baby girl Mila was born and I was busy staring at that little mensch and changing the diapers and all. It was also because I photographed the whole time for the new VISA campaign for the Olympics 2012 in London. July, September, November, December. Many great athletes in USA and EUROPE needed to be covered. Athletes from Russia, China, USA, New Zealand. Each one with a unique and interesting story. What can I say, it was a blast! Since this campaign starts early in 2012 I wasn’t allowed to show any footage at all. Below you see the olympic gold medalist Nastia Liukin who we met near Dallas to spend a day with her. Although the whole campaign was shot digital I used my 4×5 Linhof camera to take some polaroids as well. It has been a really wonderful time with all these athletes. Of course being a waterpolo player, the day with Michael Phelps and the shooting out side, in and under water was for sure a highlight of my career. As soon as the campaign is out I will post the real campaign images here.

A wonderful and very different 2011 lays behind us. A year of transformation and new visions. I must say I am so excited about this 2012. I can feel it.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

OUR BABY WAITED UNTIL WE FINISHED SNOW SHOOTING

Last week I photographed olympic gold medal winner JULIA MANCUSO for SNOW MAGAZINE in a studio in New York. High fashion meets Sports. An easy task with Julia being a total professional in front of the camera! I will let you know when it comes out. Stunning she is, that’s for sure. So buckle up for a new issue of SNOW! But that wasn’t all on that hot Friday. I only learned later that my lovely wife already had started early labor. She didn’t tell me to make sure I am 100% focused for this shooting. How cool is that! Although I was joking before I left for the shoot that we can’t have the baby today, I didn’t know my little baby girl will take me serious. So MILA VIVIENNE was born the next morning at 7.49 am. 35 minutes after we entered the Hospital she was born. Fast and furious!

And here are Barb Sanders (Publisher SNOW), Poby, Julia Mancuso and David K. Gibson (Editor in Chief SNOW)

    and this is Mila Vivienne

    ELLIOTT ERWITT no.2

And here is an absolute wonderful video about Elliott Erwitt talking about his life.
Take some time off and lean back and watch : ELLIOTT ERWITT ABOUT HIS LIFE

    ELLIOTT ERWITT

ELLIOTT ERWITT is truly one of my favorite photographers of all times. I don’t want to praise his photography in every detail – I leave this to all the others – but the way he sees the world now and then is just beautiful. Although he embraces digital photography, he doesn’t use post production to elevate his picture. For him it is about a good picture. Period. Not about what I can do with a bad picture to make it look good. That’s the old school I really like. And I simply love his dry humor to the point that sometimes I am even a bit sacred of his reaction or answers to subjects or situations. They are just mostly so unexpected, brilliant yet very clear and simple to the point. And quiet honestly he doesn’t give a damn what people think. I just love it ! This all reflects in his interviews. Here is his latest with VANITY FAIR
In 2009 I had the pleasure to spend Thanksgiving with him and all his family and friends at his New York upper west side apartment right where the parade starts. My long time producer Ellen Erwitt is his daughter and be assured working with her and her humor is a a blast ! Wonder were she got this from ?
An abolute must see is his current show at the ICP in NY. Ah, and did I mention that he got the ICP Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement ? Well, now you know.

COOL STENCIL ART BY THOMAS WITTE

My Brooklyn Navy Yard neighbor THOMAS WITTE just had an opening for his new exhibition
AT HOME AND ABROAD at the B. Beamesderfer Gallery. Very cool stencil art work on glass and other material.
He usually comes over to steel beer, chocolate or even a red bull out of my fridge and now that he is getting famous I wonder if he’ll still do that . So I asked him a couple of questions:

Poby: How does it feel to be famous now ?
Witte: I am not even close to being famous. Do you have any beers ?
Poby: You know where they are !
The show , I must say, really looks fantastic . Your work is very strong, the presentation is clean and has a very good feel. Did you have help putting this together ?
Witte: The pieces I chose were a collaborative effort between me and the gallery owner. I was choosing the placement and he did the framing and mounting for the series of six Israel pieces . The rest was ready to hang. It was really nice to see my new work out of the context of my studio in the Navy Yard.
Poby: Honestly, it never looked better, mate ! So our chats finally paid off?
Witte: Well, I never thought that countless hours of pointless conversations would actually lead to better work , but it appears that our relationship has led me down paths I wouldn’t have discovered otherwise.
Poby: It sounds like the beer talking now. I think it’s time to end this here. But thanks anyway, mate. Looking forward to the next works to come !

Here are some pictures from the opening night:

    RANKIN SHOW

Went to RANKIN opening show at MILK STUDIOS in NYC. Really cool images and a very nice guy this Rankin. Here is my favorite. How much better can one describe LOVE ?

daily sketches of the pregnant lady

it seems like everybody nowadays wants to have perfect images of his pregnant lady and the ladies want to have beautifully lit images of themselves. sleek and clean as an advertisement . My lady and I are both photographers, thats why I just went back to the roots and did some 1 minute sketches of her with watercolor and pencil. love to do this just need to do it way more often.
