welcome to my world

Living in New York makes you realize that life is not about one thing only. For me it's about the broad experience that allows me to explore my passions. Besides my love for photography, I paint and draw, create videos or play piano. Every now and then I am on a road trip across the USA with a 60's camera and a 65' Plymouth Barracuda. But there is so much more to explore: art of any kind, the way other artists see the world, or simply the question : Where does art begin and where does it end ?

JULIA MANCUSO WRITES HER PRINCESS-DIARIES IN SNOW MAGAZINE !

While working on the design of my new Portfolios for 2012 today, I got an email with the PDF of the story about JULIA MANCUSO in SNOW MAGAZINE. It’s really cool when Julia writes about what goes on in her mind during and in between races. Well done Julia ! Of course it was real fun shooting Julia in a total different, fashion way ! She feels comfortable in any outfit. I am also really happy about the print layout of the whole story. Beautifully done by the art director of SNOW magazine. See the print story below and click HERE to read the full article online.

A SHORT PERSONAL NOTE

It is not really my thing to talk about my private life. But I would like to make a little exception.
This year 2011 has been an incredible year of complete transformation. Not only did I marry my wonderful lady Amber, we also got our little baby girl Mila Vivienne. Our son Connor was the one who didn’t stop believing in completing our family with a sibling he so much wanted. What a happy man I am to have them all.

Thank you Mila for being in our life and thank you Connor for your beautiful vision.

Love P.

IT’S ABOUT TIME ! VISA THE CAMPAIGN.

For over five months I haven’t  blogged at all. That is not only because my baby girl Mila was born and I was busy staring at that little mensch and changing the diapers and all. It was also because I photographed the whole time for the new VISA campaign for the Olympics 2012 in London. July, September, November, December. Many great athletes in USA and EUROPE needed to be covered. Athletes from Russia, China, USA, New Zealand. Each one with a unique and interesting story. What can I say, it was a blast! Since this campaign starts early in 2012 I wasn’t allowed to show any footage at all. Below you see the olympic gold medalist Nastia Liukin who we met near Dallas to spend a day with her. Although the whole campaign was shot digital I used my 4×5 Linhof camera to take some polaroids as well. It has been a really wonderful time with all these athletes. Of course being a waterpolo player, the day with Michael Phelps and the shooting out side, in and under water was for sure a highlight of my career. As soon as the campaign is out I will post the real campaign images here.

A wonderful and very different 2011 lays behind us. A year of transformation and new visions. I must say I am so excited about this 2012. I can feel it.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

OUR BABY WAITED UNTIL WE FINISHED SNOW SHOOTING

Last week I photographed olympic gold medal winner JULIA MANCUSO for SNOW MAGAZINE in a studio in New York. High fashion meets Sports. An easy task with Julia being a total professional in front of the camera! I will let you know when it comes out. Stunning she is, that’s for sure. So buckle up for a new issue of SNOW! But that wasn’t all on that hot Friday. I only learned later that my lovely wife already had started early labor. She didn’t tell me to make sure I am 100% focused for this shooting. How cool is that! Although I was joking before I left for the shoot that we can’t have the baby today, I didn’t know my little baby girl will take me serious. So MILA VIVIENNE was born the next morning at 7.49 am. 35 minutes after we entered the Hospital she was born. Fast and furious!

And here are Barb Sanders (Publisher SNOW), Poby, Julia Mancuso and David K. Gibson (Editor in Chief SNOW)

and this is Mila Vivienne

ELLIOTT ERWITT no.2

And here is an absolute wonderful video about Elliott Erwitt talking about his life.
Take some time off and lean back and watch : ELLIOTT ERWITT ABOUT HIS LIFE

ELLIOTT ERWITT

ELLIOTT ERWITT is truly one of my favorite photographers of all times. I don’t want to praise his photography in every detail – I leave this to all the others – but the way he sees the world now and then is just beautiful. Although he embraces digital photography, he doesn’t use post production to elevate his picture. For him it is about a good picture. Period. Not about what I can do with a bad picture to make it look good. That’s the old school I really like. And I simply love his dry humor to the point that sometimes I am even a bit sacred of his reaction or answers to subjects or situations. They are just mostly so unexpected, brilliant yet very clear and simple to the point. And quiet honestly he doesn’t give a damn what people think. I just love it ! This all reflects in his interviews. Here is his latest with VANITY FAIR
In 2009 I had the pleasure to spend Thanksgiving with him and all his family and friends at his New York upper west side apartment right where the parade starts. My long time producer Ellen Erwitt is his daughter and be assured working with her and her humor is a a blast ! Wonder were she got this from ?
An abolute must see is his current show at the ICP in NY. Ah, and did I mention that he got the ICP Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement ? Well, now you know.

COOL STENCIL ART BY THOMAS WITTE

My Brooklyn Navy Yard neighbor THOMAS WITTE just had an opening for his new exhibition
AT HOME AND ABROAD at the B. Beamesderfer Gallery. Very cool stencil art work on glass and other material.
He usually comes over to steel beer, chocolate or even a red bull out of my fridge and now that he is getting famous I wonder if he’ll still do that . So I asked him a couple of questions:

Poby: How does it feel to be famous now ?
Witte: I am not even close to being famous. Do you have any beers ?
Poby: You know where they are !
The show , I must say, really looks fantastic . Your work is very strong, the presentation is clean and has a very good feel. Did you have help putting this together ?
Witte: The pieces I chose were a collaborative effort between me and the gallery owner. I was choosing the placement and he did the framing and mounting for the series of six Israel pieces . The rest was ready to hang. It was really nice to see my new work out of the context of my studio in the Navy Yard.
Poby: Honestly, it never looked better, mate ! So our chats finally paid off?
Witte: Well, I never thought that countless hours of pointless conversations would actually lead to better work , but it appears that our relationship has led me down paths I wouldn’t have discovered otherwise.
Poby: It sounds like the beer talking now. I think it’s time to end this here. But thanks anyway, mate. Looking forward to the next works to come !

Here are some pictures from the opening night:

RANKIN SHOW

Went to RANKIN opening show at MILK STUDIOS in NYC. Really cool images and a very nice guy this Rankin. Here is my favorite. How much better can one describe LOVE ?
